Taste Rīga - Try the locals' cuisine outside of city Center

A private tasting tour in a car - the only way to see and taste eateries outside of Rīga's touristy city center. Through centuries Latvians have absorbed traditions and cuisines from all the cultures that has ruled in these lands - Germans, Swedes, Russians - and after all, even Soviet Union had it's own way of doing kitchen stuff. Maybe because of taste, but probably because of necessity latvians have acquired their own distinct taste for stuff and this tour is all about that. First we'll visit the central market and have a taste of whatever seasonal products are available (around 5-6 different types of foods/drinks). Then we get in the vehicle and drive to visit 3 more places - a hip bakery, traditional canteen and a very local "workers cafeteria". So - if you book this, please come hungy. Keep in mind - we mostly eat seasonal stuff, thus the foods can vary greatly from tour to tour, so the attached pictures are just an example.

Typical Tour Itinerary

This is what the default tour would look like, but we are happy to change it according to your needs. (click on timeslot to expand)

11:00 - Meeting at the Central Market
Your guide will meet you at the main entrance of the Central Market (near the International Bus Terminal). Alternatively – your guide can pick you up in your hotel.
11:15 - Central Market
This is one of the very few main bazaars of European towns that still functions as an actual grocery market instead of being converted to a tourist trap selling souvenirs. Here you can have a peek in what local people actually shop for. You’ll explore the world of Latvian cuisine by tasting a few traditional things depending on the season and – if you like them – shop for items to bring back home with you. You’ll hear the stories of how and why the largest market of Europe at the time (and still) was built, and how it has managed to survive the otherwise victorious march of supermarket chains.
13:15 - Bakery
From the Central Market you’ll drive to the “Moscow Suburb” – probably the next hip area – and visit one of the newest additions to the neighbourhood – an All-Local bakery serving not only loaves of bread to go, but also quick sandwiches, deserts etc
13:45 - "Cafeteria"
A peek in a place where the working class people would go for a quick meal.
14:15 - A Traditional Meal
A full meal of Latvian Traditional food. You’ll get several different dishes – one piece each per group. This way you can try a little of everything and then decide what you like the most and have more of that.
Instagram material

Besides the tasting and photographing your foods, you'll also have the chance to witness the largest covered market in Europe as well as some suburbs, which makes a nice image for your social networking.

Fully Narrated Tour

Not only you'll taste the foods, but you'll get to hear all the stories about ingredients, how to make them and their history.

Hidden gems

Besides the carefully handpicked stalls of Central Market, you'll get to experience locals-only type of places.
